How To Keep Your Central Air Conditioner In The Best Shape

Posted on

If you want to make sure that you will have a home that is nicely cooled off throughout the entire summer, you will need to do your best to maintain the condition of the central air conditioning unit. The following are some tips that can help you do just that.

Keep Clean Filters In The Unit

You will want to make sure that you are removing and cleaning the filter for the central air conditioning unit at least once a month while it is in use. You will also want to completely replace it with a new one at the beginning of the summer before you start using the air conditioner and at least once in the middle of summer. By doing this, you will be sure to have the cleanest filter possible within the unit. When you do not properly clean and replace the air filters, the air flow will become restricted and your home will not be able to be cooled off as well as it should.

Make Sure The Condenser Coils Remain Clean

To help make sure that the condenser coils remain clean, you will want to keep bushes and random materials a few feet away from the central air conditioning unit. This helps prevent the build up of dirt or dust on the coils. However, even with the perimeter clear, you will still need to have a contractor or HVAC technician clean off the coils about once a season. By keeping the condenser coils clean, the condenser will be able to continue to work properly.

Schedule A Yearly Maintenance Job

Find a quality HVAC technician who can come to your home once a year in order to perform a standard maintenance overhaul on the central air conditioner. This is usually best done at the beginning of the season before it gets to the point where you need to turn on the unit. Some of the things that should be done once a year include checking the refrigerant levels and replacing the fluid as needed, tightening and replacing belts for the fans, adding lubricant to bearings and the motor, and inspecting the thermostat to make sure that it is accurate. There may be other things that your HVAC technician will want to inspect or adjust in order to ensure that you are going to be able to get the best use out of your central air conditioning unit.

While there are a few things that you have to do in order to keep the air conditioning system in the best possible shape, knowing that you will have better results with it because you took the time will be more than worth it.
